Descendants in New Zealand
Bessie grew up to marry a farmer, and one of their sons was Frank Onion, chairman of the NZ Dairy Board. Thomas's descendants are around Turangi and Rotorua, where some of them run Reesby Buses, and around Wanganui and the Manawatu. Frank became a sheep farmer, butcher and timber mill owner. He married Maude (daughter of William Stagg and Christina Haase)and had one son, my father Bill. Frank's brother Bill was a soldier and engineer. Bert also became a soldier and developed a love for horse racing. As for Len, son of Antonio Valledo ... he turned out the musical one and was a good singer. He and his wife Mavis were leading lights in Christchurch repertory and they entertained Sir Lawrence Olivier and Vivien Leigh when they came to New Zealand.

I was the baby in this photo, which would have been taken in late 1942. Dora, my great-grandmother, is seated on the right. She's the old lady dressed in black. |
